From what I can gather, the Rifles are supposed to be something of a modern-era Jam… for UK audiences at least. And while both supporting and getting a major fan in Paul Weller hasn’t hurt their cause, their two albums to date haven’t measured up to the likes of All Mod Cons, Sound Affects or The Gift. Then again, the Jam’s early albums weren’t exactly knockouts from top to bottom, either. While The Great Escape‘s title track may be its most arresting moment, “Romeo and Julie” is far and away its most charming. The British accents, the bubbly energy, the laments of young love — it’s the exact kind of record I would have worshipped when I was a teenager. Hell, it’s the exact kind of record that still excites me and makes me feel like a teenager again. Even the goofy “whoa-whoa-whoa-oh”s are fun as hell to sing along to. Play this one in the car at full tilt on the highway and tell me it doesn’t provide a proper spark. I’m not sure the officer pulling you over speeding will buy the argument, though.
